Change of Venue

When reading Howard Zinn's Changing Minds, One at a Time in the March 2005 magazine The Progressive I found a sense of relief. That relief, although it seems that liberals are being bullied in every newspaper, magazine and every television news program, is that the nature of the liberal cause is the nature of the American cause. It is America's reason to exist. "This land is your land, this land is my land" and no matter what is said or done Americans will always work to better our lives and pursue liberty. The aberrant vision of those that occupy our government along with the sycophants that serve them may preoccupy us from time to time but this too shall pass. We will continue our lives, lives that are messy and impassioned, and whatever the minority governments that are "elected', we will do what we will do and we will be a more liberal nation twenty years hence. The common sense of Americans is the "Common Sense" that Thomas Paine wrote and "Liberty Leading the People" that Delacroix painted. It is in the words and deeds of Thoreau, King, Gandhi, Lincoln, Jefferson, Garvey and Dellinger to name just a few. We do not fear those in power because we know that their power is only allowed as long as we are left to live our lives. We also know "that this nation shall have a new birth of freedom, and that the government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.".

Civil Disobedience

American Friends Service Committee is perhaps the best example we have today of this American tradition. The American Friends strive to do right without regard to the consequences they face. As they seeks out truth in America and the around the world, they organize good works to assuage those actions that harm our fellow human-beings here and abroad. Not being utopians they are authentic in words and deeds. With terra firma as their footing, they are ready to do what they can to make the moment better for people as they work intellectually to inspire us to use peace and compassion as our focus in life. This reflective truth is spoken to the powerful daily. The results of this changing of minds and hearts is one that makes a difference in life to those touched.

Eyes Wide Open Exhibit that is touring America is a wonderful example of people touching others and bringing the all too real stories of those who are killed and maimed in war alive for us to see and feel. One sees war, any war, as a waste of human life without any social or moral purpose. The exhibit's use of the shoes of those killed in the still burning Iraqi War of Occupation allows us to reflect on the living friends and families of the dead and the dead of all nations drawn into this mistake through fear, ignorance and avarice. The shoes of course are a basic necessity for the living to be able to seek out food, water and shelter. One cannot survive for long in the world without shoes. These shoes serve us by showing us that the dead of this war can cause us to take actions in our daily lives that not only bring peace by helping to stop war, but bring peace by changing our hearts and minds in our daily lives through redemptive reflection, speaking truth to power and non-violent action. Thus the shoes allow us a metaphorical means to gain the basic necessity of peace and compassion in our own lives

Civil Disobedience that brings out the human being in us to do right without regard to the consequences we face is truly an American virtue and an historical necessity that invigorates our people. With our eyes wide open and our heads held high we can walk together hand in hand in a better way and a better life.

Courage to Fail In Sean O'Hagan's article " Why Lennon lives on" he quotes Bono saying that what he admires mostabout him is 'that daring-to-fail courage that often backfired. Even though he had a mouth full of spite and spleen, he always had a deep vulnerability and a huge heart. He was a true artist insofar as he wasn't afraid to fail.'

Working Class Hero 'Though he was a hero to many, his whole point was not heroic,' says Bono. 'He hadn't always been the man he wanted to be, yet he kept struggling to redefine himself and to find himself. His real strength was his raw honesty and vulnerability. This was the guy who sang "Help", don't forget. He dared to bare his soul, and he dared to fail. That takes real courage.' -Sean O'Hagan's "Why Lennon lives on"

October 9, 1940 John Lennon was born. "If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace."

"How I Won The War" "It is a very entertaining, a very witty and a very funny movie."

"It has been reviewed; it has been explained. For almost forty years now this movie has been a mystery to a vast audience because the viewers and reviewers miss the obvious: "How I Won The Won" is comedy. When one has the opportunity to enjoy this movie one will find that the director and writer worked well together to bring us a movie that one can enjoy again and again. Much like "Duck Soup" thirty-four years earlier made a mockery of the Great War, "How I Won The War" mocks the "good" War (The Second World War.) Richard Lester's directing style brings this movie to his audience in a similar way that Brecht brought "The Three Penny Opera" to his stage audience. Lester has an ability to force you to laugh at times when you wished you hadn't laughed. Now circa 2005, it is a movie that has been re-discovered for its vitality and its humor. Let yourself go, relax and enjoy a classic movie experience.'- Editor 133 at imdb.com

War is Over (If You Want it) . War Is Over Picture

On Peace- John Lennon "It just was a gradual development over the years. I mean last year was 'all you need is love.' This year, it's 'all you need is love and peace, baby.' Give peace a chance, and remember Love. The only hope for us is peace. Violence begets violence. You can have peace as soon as you like if we all pull together. You're all geniuses, and you're all beautiful. You don't need anyone to tell you who you are. You are what you are. Get out there and get peace, think peace, and live peace and breathe peace, and you'll get it as soon as you like."
